If you require your official translations to be apostilled or legalized by Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería), the official translator’s signature on each translated document must first be authenticated by a notary public.
You can complete this process in any city where Copywrite Colombia has offices and where the official translator’s signature is registered (Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Barranquilla, Chía, Bucaramanga, Cartagena, Pereira).
We can provide a quote for this additional service at our main office in Bogotá if requested by the client.
Please note that for signature authentication (also known as notarization of official translations) to take place at the notary office, documents must carry the original seal and signature of the translator.
Printed copies are not accepted—specifically, a printout of the PDF of your official translation is invalid. You must present the physical documents with the original signature and seal of the official translator.
As a Copywrite Colombia customer, you or anyone you authorize can conveniently pick up your translations from your preferred office location.
Additionally, as an optional service, we offer complete management of the notarization process, including signature authentication, if requested by the client.
Remember that official translations can be authenticated only at a notary office where the official translator has registered their seal and signature. Registered locations for Copywrite Colombia:

We are happy to make any changes you request to the official translations, provided these changes are consistent with the original information being translated.

To have your translation apostilled (certificate of authenticity for Hague Convention countries) or legalized (a similar process for nonparticipating countries) with the Colombian Cancillería, the official translator’s signature must be authenticated by the notary where the signature is registered.

The pre-apostille process is the notarial procedure required for translations that will be apostilled on the Cancillería (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) website. As part of this process, we authenticate the Official Translator’s signature and request the issuance of a notarial code, which we email to you so that you can complete the apostille online. Obtaining this notarial code is an essential step in the apostille procedure.
At Copywrite Colombia, we do not offer apostille or legalization services—we only provide the translated documents, ready to be uploaded. These procedures must be completed by you, a friend, or a family member directly through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. However, if you need to apostille a translation, please keep the following in mind:
1.To begin the apostille or legalization process, the Official Translator’s signature must first be authenticated at a Notary Office in Colombia. This can be done in person in cities where the translator has previously registered their signature. Our General Manager has his signature registered in eight cities across the country, making it easier for clients to find a nearby Notary Office. Alternatively, for a fee, we can handle the notarization process on your behalf to authenticate the translator’s signature.
2. An alphanumeric notary code is required for the apostille process. We can carry out this procedure for you as part of the authentication process; to do so, please provide us with your email address so we can send you the notary code.
3. If you would like us to handle the notarization, it will be done at our main office in Bogotá. If you are in another city and need the certified translation in physical form, or if you are in Bogotá but cannot come to our office, you will need to cover the shipping cost via Servientrega. The apostille and legalization process with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is done online and only requires scanned documents.
Since the 2020 Resolution, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs no longer publishes a public list of Official Translators. To verify a translator’s credentials, you can request their Certificate of Competence or contact the institution that issued it. Our General Manager, Mr. Edward William Goodson-Wickes, is an Official Translator with Certificate of Competence No. 0424 issued by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
This information can be verified through the Language Department at the Universidad Nacional, which is currently responding to such requests via the following email: [email protected]
No, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) no longer issues certificates accrediting Colombian Official Translators, since the entry into force of Article 6 of Resolution 1959 of 2020.
Until 2018, the Cancillería published the list of Official Translators recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, starting in 2019, the list is no longer available, and it is now the responsibility of notaries to certify the signature of the Official Translator when required.
In Colombia, Official Translators may be certified by one of the following three entities: the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the Universidad de Antioquia, or the Ministry of Justice. We have been informed that the Language Department at the Universidad Nacional is currently handling verification requests via the following email: [email protected].
To verify credentials through the Universidad de Antioquia, it is recommended to contact the School of Languages at [email protected]. For verification through the Ministry of Justice, you may call PBX 601 4443100 ext. 1190 or the national toll-free line 01-8000-911-170.
We don’t offer courses ourselves. Our blog has some articles about international institutions that provide these courses, but we are not directly affiliated with them. Our company is dedicated exclusively to Official Translations.
An official translation is the process by which a certified translator converts a written document from Spanish into a foreign language—most commonly English—or from a foreign language into Spanish, which is Colombia’s official language. These translations are required for a variety of legal and administrative purposes, such as applying for visas, registering foreign academic degrees, legalizing international contracts, and submitting legal documents.
All our translations are official: each page is certified, meaning it includes the sworn statement of the Official Translator attesting that it is a true and accurate translation of the original, and is both signed and stamped by the Official Translator. This sets it apart from a simple or non-certified translation, which we also offer when required.
Official translations can only be authenticated at a notary where the official translator has registered their seal and signature. In the case of Copywrite Colombia, these are:
In Bogotá: Notary 11 – Calle 85 with Carrera 10
In Cali: Notary 5 – Calle 29 Nte. No. 6AN-35
In Medellín: Notary 20 – Calle 10 No. 43E-44
In Barranquilla: Notary 9 – Carrera 58 No. 64-126
In Chía: Notary 2 – Calle 12 No. 13-13
In Bucaramanga: Notary 7 – Calle 35 No. 12-06
The structure of an Official Translation is as follows: the header includes the translation number, the address, the phone number, and the email of the Official Translator. The footer contains the sworn statement of the Translator, affirming their competence to translate both the source and target languages, and it also bears the Official Translator’s seal and signature.
The Official Translator’s signature does not need to be notarized for all official translations. However, notarization is required if the receiving entity specifically requests the translation to be apostilled or legalized through the Cancillería (Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
